Tipping Point Analysis for Planning Electricity Network Evolution

Tipping Point Analysis offers an approach to investigating strategic options in a systematic way. Work has been undertaken in the Smart Grid Forum that shows early stage results from applying this method to the uptake of low carbon technologies in electricity distribution networks in the UK. The outcomes of this work are described in the Smart Grid Forum Work Stream 3 Phase 3 Tipping Point Analysis report. The study was undertaken as part of a larger project led by EA Technology, the full scope of which addressed how distribution networks could evolve over the coming decades. Earlier work exploring the value of tipping points in this context was addressed in a previous Smart Grid Forum report.

There is a lot more that could be learnt from further application of this technique – not only for distribution networks, but more generally across the electricity sector. Its use can help a number of stakeholders address the complexity and uncertainty that characterise the sector and its evolution.
